It gives me great joy to present the ministry of the Senate Centre for Extension and Pastoral Theological Research (SCEPTRE), a programme of the Senate of Serampore College, located in Kolkata.
SCEPTRE was established with a clear and compelling vision: to make theological education accessible to all the people of God, especially those who are unable to pursue residential theological training due to personal, vocational, or socio-economic constraints. We believe that theological education should not remain confined within institutional walls but must reach people where they are, within their own contexts and communities. In a rapidly changing world, the Church is called to respond with faithfulness, wisdom, and relevance; therefore, SCEPTRE is committed to promoting holistic, ecumenical, and liberative theological education that equips learners for meaningful participation in God’s mission.
Our guiding conviction is simple yet profound: to take theological education to the people. Through carefully designed courses, contextual study materials, and learner-oriented methodologies, we seek to empower individuals to engage in theological reflection and ministry in their own settings. With a strong emphasis on vernacular theological education, we encourage learners to reflect, articulate, and live out their faith in the language closest to their hearts, nurturing not only knowledge but also spiritual growth, critical thinking, and faithful discipleship.
