Introduction:
The Diploma in Contextual Theologies is offered by Serampore College (University) for private study. The responsibility for administering the programme is with the Executive Committee under the Senate of Serampore College’s overall supervision.
The Senate of Serampore College (University) offered the Diploma in Contextual Theologies as an External Study programme. The course is introduced to provide dynamic engagements between theological formulations that are taking place in theological colleges/seminaries and the local church community. It seeks to inspire and guide the candidates, mainly the laity, to have a critical theological reflection on their own experiences so that authentic and radical life-transforming contextual theologies may be formulated by the people themselves. This, in turn, can generate more profound interest and creativity in the formulation of contextual theologies in systematic theological education in colleges/seminaries and to keep such education from becoming monotonous, institutionalized and out-dated.
Objectives:
- To make students understand the need and importance of contextual theological education.
- To enable students to be aware of and understand contextual theological formulations that are taking place in the local church community, and to be the agents in applying inclusive and life-affirming theological formulations in their own context.
- To make the Gospel of Christ relevant and authentic through contextual interpretation that will inspire and strengthen the church communities to face different challenges.
- To bridge the gap between contextual theological formulations in theological colleges/seminaries and the local congregation so that there can be mutual constructive criticisms and the opportunity to grow together to search and practice theologies that nurture and sustain authentic faith in God.
